Broken River Ski Field
Shanti reports…
We’d only ever walked up the Broken River Ski Field road as far as the track turnoff to Camp Saddle, which isn’t really far at all - 15 to 20 minutes, that’s all. So today we set off on a recce trip to see what we would find higher up at the actual ski field.
It was a 6 degree start - at 10am - and there was snow higher up after some rain or snow overnight (depending on what elevation you were on).
The road through the forest was enjoyable and it wasn’t long before we’d passed the Camp Saddle turnoff and the sheds. A little further along the road our great dog noses found an unmarked forest track on a sharp u-bend.
Our humans agreed that forest paths were more fun than roads (plus, Mum said it was shorter and cut out some of the zigs and zags) so up we went. We joined the road much higher up and were soon on another more clearly marked path through the forest - and it wasn’t long before we reached the first buildings.
Then it was back on the road, up to one of the lifts and up some more to Palmer Lodge. We walked up to the top of the next ski lift, and then started to climb Nervous Knob.
Our humans decided to go up the grassy and rocky section right ahead, rather than traverse up to the ridge line on the scree. I think we were mountain climbing and I was pretty pleased when we stopped for lunch.
There were lovely views of Hamilton Peak with a dusting of snow. Little did I know that I would be on top of Hamilton Peak the following week!
After lunch we headed back down, first through a gully with snow and then down the scree. It was an amazing adventure and great to explore a new spot - we will be back. Below are some of the snow (and other) photos.
