Leith Hill revisted

Shanti reports…

Today we headed up Leith Hill again - and we got to the top. There are two summits. Mum says the one closer to the big mountains is the highest, but the one closer to the scree face on the Leith Hill Loop Track looks higher to me. Anyway - we went to both of them, so definitely mission accomplished, unlike last time.

It was a cold start and Mum set off at a cracker pace up the Leith Hill Loop Track from Castle Hill Village on a mission to warm up. We arrived at the point where we start the off-route climb in no time. Layers of human clothing had already come off by then.

We stopped for a quick snack break. Our goal was to get above that scree that you can see at the top of this photo.

It was a steep climb up Leith Hill. We stopped just before the summit for another break. We didn’t know there was less than 100m to the cairn at the top, but our spot was out the wind (compared to the exposed ridge on the top), so a clever decision in hindsight.

We stopped at the cairn above the scree, then followed the ridge towards Mt Cloudesly to the second cairn and summit, then made our way back and looped down the other side of the scree before joining the path and heading back the same way.

A good outing with outstanding 360 degree views. Mum says the route (straight up and down - without our detours) is just over 8km and has a 660m elevation gain.

Here’s one last look at those views…
