Ice Needles!

Shanti reports…

We had another enjoyable outing on the Hogs Back Track. An early and frosty start (minus 4) at the begining of winter meant I saw my first ever ice needles, or frost heave… or whatever the correct term for it is - Mum isn’t entirely sure.

Near the start of the track - distracted by ice needles. They weren’t anywhere near as much fun on the way back as they’d melted into slushy slippery mud! Below - ice needles / frost heave and mushrooms.

We did the walk to Picnic Rock and back and tried the longer route down - a gentle gradient for cyclists but pretty frustrating for walkers, although we did have a close encounter with a curious fantail.
